HKCOG Guidelines: Guidelines for Cervical Cancer Prevention and Screening.

There have been updates in the scientific understanding of cervical cancer since the prior set of cervical cancer prevention and screening guidelines was published by the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (HKCOG) in 2016, including novel nomenclature developed by the World Health Organization (WHO).1 New technologies such as 9-valent vaccines offer wider coverage against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections that lead to cervical cancer with added coverage implemented by population-based vaccination programs like the Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme (HKCIP).1 Additionally, it was reminded that HPV tests need to be clinically validated and target high-risk strains including HPV16 and HPV18 to be effective for screening and triaging.1

These changes necessitated an update in the practice of screening and prevention of cervical cancer in Hong Kong. The recommendations in the 2024 guidelines have been tailored to the local population, with consideration of the infrastructure available and the needs of women in Hong Kong. They offer guidance to both gynaecologists and general practitioners on advising the public.1 In this article, the screening and triaging recommendations on the testing schedule and modalities for different populations, as well as the triaging and follow-up plans required after the screening process are outlined in the tables and diagrams below.
